Heartburn

The heart is an amazing organ of the body.   Not only should we be familiar with it, we should also take good care of it.  What happens in our heart when we are in pain?  How do we deal with this pain?

Heart burn is a painful feeling in the chest and throat area. It happens when stomach acid goes up the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. This feeling is usually felt worse after eating or when lying flat. It can also be accompanied by a bitter or acidic taste in the mouth.Certain foods can trigger heart burn.  This include spicy foods, chocolate, fried foods, and alcoholic/mint beverages.

Heartburn that occurs frequently and interferes with day to day activity is called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is advisable to seek medical consult since this disease requires medications or certain procedures. It is also necessary to see the doctor if heartburn occurs more than twice a week, difficulty of swallowing is present, or there is persistent vomiting. When not treated, GERD can seriously damage the esophagus. It can lead to complications like bleeding, ulcers, and chronic scarring.

Heart attack

Heart attack is the death of a segment of heart muscle caused by a loss of blood supply. The blood is usually cut off when an artery supplying the heart muscle is blocked by a blood clot.

Common signs and symptoms of heart attack are chest pain, shortness of breath, or sudden dizziness. If a person experiences these signs of heart attack, he should immediately seek medical attention so that proper tests can be done and right treatment be given. Patients are given medical treatment and advanced tests/procedures can also be done based on the result of the initial tests.

Stress and the Heart

Stress is a risk factor for heart disease and other illnesses. When one is under stress, there is high level of stress hormone like adrenaline and cortisol. If one is exposed to these stress hormones for prolonged period of time, changes can occur which increases the chances of heart attack and other diseases.
